Once Forgotten 1.5

The city lay far behind them. Sari walked slightly behind her Master, her mind a blank. Kadrin had not said a word since they had left Gartrand's shop. He had walked in silence, not even stopping to check she was still following. He didn't have to. The one thing that Sari had ever wanted was to be able to control her powers, but she had never given much thought about the price she would have to pay to get it.

"You had better start thinking of a new name." Kadrin said suddenly. She shook her head.

"What?" She asked. Kadrin stopped and turned to her.

"A new name. You need to start thinking of what you want your new name to be." Kadrin said.

"A-a new name? What are you talking about?" She asked, confusion whirling through her mind.

"Ah, of course. Allow me to explain. I am what an Overseer. Overseers are powerful mages, true mages. We wield and use true magyck. The pure untamed power of the elements themselves. All things and all elements can be broken down to four basic elements: wind, water, earth, and fire. By weaving these elements together, you can do almost anything. Go anywhere. Being an Overseer is being free. However, in order to walk the path of the Overseers, you must leave your past behind. The life you once lived is gone. It vanished the minute you asked me to train you. Kadic may have interceded on your behalf, but in all truth and honesty, only you could have made the choice. So I ask you now, are you willing to leave everything behind? Look back at the city if you must, but we will go no farther until you have finally made up that mind of yours." Kadrin promptly left the path and went over to a rocky outcropping.

Sari stood, trying to process what she had just been told. She hadn't realized. Was this what she wanted? She turned back to her city. She had grown up there with her sister. With Brint. She sat on a nearby rock. Brint had left a few years ago. No goodbye. No note. They had just woken up one morning, and he was gone. A month later, a letter had arrived saying that he had left because he had felt restless and had wanted to see the world. She frowned. Now, she was doing the same. She closed her eyes and nodded. She walked to where Kadrin stood, waiting.

"And what have you decided?" He asked.

"I'm going with you. I want to be trained as an Overseer." She took a deep breath, but Kadrin stopped her from saying anything.

"Before you rush into things do something incredibly stupid, only truly let go of your past when you have chosen a new name." He continued to look out over the plains. "I, too, once stood where you now stand; I had to shed my past. Although, my circumstances were far different. Unlike you, I was overjoyed to leave my past behind. To take on a new identity. Now, come. It is a long way to the Six Nations." She followed him with her head held high.
