Rya continued to walk, frowning. Kadrin turned to her. "If you have something to say, by all means say it."
Rya sighed. "I thought you were going to train me? So far, I haven't even had a real lesson!"
"Really? You feel as though you have learned nothing then?" Kadrin asked.
She shook her head. "Not really."
"Then you are blind. I have been teaching you all along, but if you have not learned the lessons, then you are as blind as your so-called 'Masters'." Kadrin responded. "Think back over everything. The exercise with the names was to teach you to focus. The sylphs taught you to control your emotions. These are but the first steps. Focus, control, awareness. Focus, concentrate upon what you want accomplished. Control, you yourself admitted that power means nothing without it. Control allows you to use power. Awareness, be mindful of all that goes on. Observe everyone. The rich man flaunting his wealth. The middle class mother working to feed her newborn child. The poor beggar scavenging for his meal.
"Master these three and you will be well on your way on the path of the Overseer. For example, let's propose that there is a feud between your family and a neighboring one. You are given a task to spy on them. If you allow your mind to wander, you will be killed, so you shove all else out of your mind. You successfully sneak onto their land, and instantly you observe all that goes on. You return and report back to the rest of your family.
"You just used all three of the basic principles of magyck. Without these three things, you won't get very far." Kadrin answered.
Rya hung her head. "Forgive me, Master. I should not have been so rash."
Kadrin chuckled. "There is nothing to apologize for."
"But what of awareness? You haven't shown me that one." She asked.
"There is no need. You already stumbled upon it on your own. That day as you sat with Kadic and meditated, you broke through. You reached out to your surroundings, and they guided you to me. Why? Because you sought someone who could teach you." Kadrin answered. Rya tossed her ponytail back over her shoulder.
"Master, when will you teach me to use my power?" She sighed.
"Soon enough. You still have a bit to learn before you will be ready for that." Kadrin answered. He stooped to pick up a rock and tossed it to her. "But if you truly wish to learn magyck, then here. Try moving this, but without any of those 'spells' the Wizards' Guild uses." Rya sighed and held the stone in her hand. Everyone had to start somewhere.
