As the sun set, the Master and his Apprentice were far from the city they had started out from. Sari had followed her new Master with no complaint. She hadn't asked for any breaks, stopping when he stopped and walking when he moved out again. All the while, she thought of a name. After thinking over ever name she knew in recent history, she began to search through past languages. Finally, about ready to just call it quits for the day, she began to think back to an even ancienter time. She took two words and began molding them together.
"Master?" She asked. Kadrin stopped and turned back to her. "I have a name." He nodded. "I am Valarrya."
Kadrin was silent for a long time. Finally, he nodded, satisfied. "A very well name. It gives you something to work for. You took the ancient word valardent and ryandt. Words that are the very essence of 'control' and 'power'. And one day, you will be ready for such a name. Until then, you shall be Rya, for that it is what you are. You are nothing but raw, untamed power. A danger to everything, including yourself." He took her chin and tilted it up so she was looking up at him. "Do not let my words trouble you, young one. I was called Rin for years before my own Master granted me my full name. Kadrin is derived from three words, interesting enough, from the same language you resorted to. 'Ka' comes from kaldis, which means 'one'. The 'd' is derived from the word dilenth, which means 'who'. 'Rin' comes from the word rincant. Rincant means 'to stand'. Now, I am going to let you peace them together. What does my name mean?"
"Your name means 'one who stands'." She answered.
Kadrin sighed. "You have much to learn, Rya." He glanced at the sky. "We won't reach the next town until after nightfall."
Rya stiffened. "You mean travel the road at night??"
Kadrin chuckled. "And why not? Robbers, bandits, why should I fear them?"
"B-but what about the ghouls? The wraiths? Don't the spirits of the dead travel the roads at night??" She asked.
Kadrin burst into laughter. "Wraiths and ghouls?! Hahahahaha!!! They won't be out to night. Not while we are on the road at any rate. They fear our auras."
"Because of our power?" Rya asked. Kadrin nodded.
"Now you're using that head of yours. They know that I could easily disperse them." Kadrin answered. "Now, let's move. And while we walk, I want you to truly think over the meaning of your name and my name. And if you want to, you can even ponder over Gartrand's name."
Rya sighed. "Yes, Master." She fell in behind him without another word.
